Despite their attempts,Jose Mourinho’s side looked more likely to break the deadlock and did so in the 32nd minute through midfielder Juan Mata.
Watford had chances to level, with Zarate’s free-kick well saved by David De Gea, before Anthony Martial wrapped up the points for the hosts midway through the second half.
Daryl Janmaat could have made United sweat but the Dutch international failed to convert with the goal gaping.
