We go back to 21 December 2008, to remember the last time West Bromwich Albion beat Manchester City in the league.
This weekend, Manchester City arrive at The Hawthorns unbeaten in the league against West Bromwich Albion for nearly eight years. During that run, the two teams have met 13 times, with Albion only claiming one draw. Manchester City have put 33 goals past the Baggies, scoring three or more on eight of those occasions.
The last time West Brom beat City in the league, the Sheik Mansour era had just begun and both sides were fighting it out in the relegation zone. In a drab game of few chances, West Brom took the lead in the 69th minute when James Morrison slipped the ball to Luke Moore to score his first goal for the club.
However, Mark Hughes’ City side looked to have rescued a point with just four minutes remaining. Felipe Caicedo’s back heel deflected in off Albion goalkeeper Scott Carson to hand City a late equaliser. City pushed for a second but Albion broke away down the right hand side with Gianni Zuiverloon. The Dutch full-back crossed for Roman Bednar, who rose above Micah Richards and Joe Hart to head home a last-gasp winner.
The following month, Manchester City would go on to spend close to £80million on five new players, including Robinho from Real Madrid.
City’s big-money signings would help turn around their season, as they recovered to finish in a respectable 10th place. In stark contrast, West Brom would not spend any money in the January transfer window, only bringing in two players on loan. Tony Mowbray’s side would go on to finish bottom of the league. The financial gulf between the two sides has clearly carried on to the pitch.
