On the 25th of September 2010, West Brom pulled off a stunning 3-2 victory away against Arsenal. Let’s take a look back at that memorable day.
West Brom headed to the Emirates in a buoyant mood, following their midweek cup upset over Manchester City. Roberto Di Matteo’s side were awarded a first-half penalty when Arsenal keeper Manuel Almunia clumsily brought down Peter Odemwingie in the area. The Spaniard, however, immediately redeemed himself by saving Chris Brunt’s weak penalty attempt.
West Brom weren’t deterred by the miss, though, and came out firing in the second-half. A tricky run from ex-Arsenal man Jerome Thomas allowed him to lay the ball across for Odemwingie to put Albion ahead from close range.
West Brom doubled their lead two minutes later, when Gonzalo Jara burst through the Arsenal defence and his low drive deflected in off Alumina. The Arsenal keeper was at fault yet again as Albion took a three-goal lead. The stopper unnecessarily raced out to close down Brunt, and allowed the midfielder to square the ball to Thomas for simple tap in.
Arsenal did fight back and grabbed a goal back almost immediately through Samir Nasri. Another late goal from Nasri led to a tense few final moments, but Di Matteo’s side held firm to claim all three points. The win marked West Brom’s first away victory over the Gunners since December of 1983.
