We remember the day Watford put six past Leeds United at Elland Road.
On this day six years ago, Gianfranco Zola led his Watford side to an emphatic 6-1 win against Leeds United.
The Hornets arrived at Elland Road a place below Leeds in the table following a goalless draw at home to Millwall. Zola’s side had been relatively goal shy in previous weeks having scored just six in their last seven outings.
But they only had to wait 27 minutes for Matej Vydra to find the back of net at Elland Road. Alex Geijo played in the Czech striker, who fired the ball into the net past Paddy Kenny. Leeds made their task even harder when Jason Pearce saw red for a foul on Almen Abdi just before half time.
A horrific injury to Rodolph Austin early in the second half meant the home side would have to continue with nine men, as Neil Warnock had already used his three substitutions.
The introduction of Troy Deeney sparked a late surge of goals from the visitors. Just a minute after he replaced Geijo, Abdi scored Watford’s second strike before Mark Yeates added another with a wonderful 25-yard free-kick.
Leeds pulled one back through Michael Tonge’s penalty but Vyrda grabbed his second shortly after to seal the points for the Hornets.
As the game entered injury time, Sean Murray scored Watford’s fifth with an eye-catching long-range strike. The midfielder turned provider as he set up Deeney to round-off the scoring with a yet another stunning strike.
The win saw Zola’s men jump to 12th in the table, while Leeds dropped to 17th.
