Aston Villa 1-0 Birmingham City (25^th April, 2010 – Premier League)

James Milner’s late penalty gave Aston Villa their sixth win in a row over their West Midlands rivals. Birmingham City had looked the more likely to break the deadlock in the second half but Brad Friedel was in excellent form to deny Cameron Jerome and Lee Bowyer. Liam Ridgewell also had his header cleared of the line by Stewart Downing.

With less than ten minutes to go, Gabby Agbonlahor broke into the Blues penalty area and went down following a challenge from Roger Johnson. Much to the bemusement of the Birmingham players, Martin Atkinson pointed the spot. Milner converted the penalty to move Villa into fifth place and condemn Birmingham to their eighth game without a win.

Aston Villa 0-0 Birmingham City (31^st October, 2010 – Premier League)

Villa almost registered another late victory over Birmingham in this tight affair at Villa Park. Ciaran Clark’s header went agonisingly close before Ashley Young hit the woodwork with long-range drive. Cameron Jerome came closest for Blues but he could only force a routine save from Brad Friedel. The draw meant only a point separated the sides in the table, with Birmingham in 14^th and Villa in 13^th.

Birmingham City 2-1 Aston Villa (1^st December, 2010 – League Cup Quarter Final)

Fan trouble overshadowed a dramatic game at St Andrews which saw Nikola Zigic send Birmingham through to the semi-final of the cup. Richard Dunne’s foul on Lee Bowyer allowed Sebastian Larsson to give Birmingham the lead from the spot on 12 minutes. Villa fought their way back into the game and equalised through Agbonlahor with Gerard Houllier’s side looking the better side heading into the break.

Villa pressed for a winner in the second half with Ashley Young and Stephen Ireland squandering great opportunities. The game looked set for extra-time until Cameron Jerome played a wonderful ball across for Zigic to fire home the winner.

Birmingham City 1-1 Aston Villa (16^th January, 2011 – Premier League)

James Collins rescued a point for Villa to help Gerard Houllier’s side out of the relegation zone. Roger Johnson had volleyed Birmingham into a 49^th minute lead but Villa came back strong – hitting the woodwork four times. Their efforts were rewarded when Mark Albrighton’s cross was helped on by Agbonlahor for Collins to grab the equaliser. The result meant both sides were still hovering just above the relegation zone.

Aston Villa 1-0 Birmingham City (22^nd September, 2015 – League Cup)

Villa came out winners in the first Second City derby in over four years. Rudy Gestede headed home Jordan Amavi’s cross to hand Tim Sherwood’s struggling side a much needed win. Blues could have grabbed an equaliser but Jacques Maghoma wasted an excellent opportunity. Even still, Villa looked the more likely to extend their lead, as Scott Sinclair and Jordan Ayew were denied by fine saves from Tomasz Kuszszak.
