Hull City supporters were left bemused by Oumar Niasse’s red card against Watford.
Hull City overcame Watford to claim a vital three points in the fight for Premier League survival. This was despite a controversial red card shown to Tigers’ forward Oumar Niasse midway through the first half.
Niasse, who arrived at Hull on-loan from Everton in January, was given his marching orders by referee Robert Madley for a tackle on Watford striker M’Baye Niang. The decision came to the dismay of many in the stadium – and set up an uphill battle for Marco Silva’s side with 65 minutes still to play.
Watford had chances to make their man advantage count. Sebastian Prodl and Etienne Capoue were both denied the opening goal by fine saves from the Hull City goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic. The latter save proved decisive as Kamil Grosicki went up the other end and crossed for Lazar Markovic to put the hosts into a 62th minute lead.
Sam Clucas made sure of the points nine minutes later. The former Chesterfield United man hit a wicked left-footed strike from outside the box to send the Hull City supporters wild.
Victory sees Hull maintain their two-point cushion over the relegation zone after Swansea City beat Stoke City 2-0 at the Liberty Stadium. Hull City boss Silva now faces a nervous wait to see whether four-goal striker Niasse has his three-game suspension overturned.
