As Sunderland face another nervy run in, we take a look at their record in the final ten games of the last three seasons.

Sunderland went into their final ten games of the season three points from safety with two games in hand on their nearest rivals.

A run of four consecutive defeats then left Gus Poyet’s side bottom of the league and seven points adrift of their nearest rivals.

However, the Black Cats followed up a late turnaround away to title-chasing Manchester City with a miraculous win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge to breathe life into their fight for Premier League survival.

Poyet’s men continued their form with wins over Cardiff City, Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion to complete a remarkable escape from relegation.

Sunderland’s 4-0 defeat to Aston Villa prompted Dick Advocaat to replace Gus Poyet for the final nine games of the campaign.

After an agonising away defeat to West Ham, Advocaat’s side hit back with a derby day win over Newcastle United at the Stadium of Light.

Failure to beat Crystal Palace and Stoke City saw the Black Cats fall back into the relegation zone before back-to-back wins over Southampton and Everton pulled them two points clear. Sunderland then held Leicester and Arsenal to goalless draws to get over the finishing line.

Only goal-difference kept Sunderland out of the bottom three heading into the final ten games of the 2015/6 season.

Draws with Southampton, Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion, followed by a defeat to Leicester City dragged Sunderland back into the drop zone.

However, the Black Cats’ 3-0 victory at Carrow Road over relegation rivals Norwich City proved to be a massive turning-point in the hunt for Premier League survival. Sam Allardyce’s side held Arsenal and Stoke City to draws before wins against Chelsea and Everton secured their safety.
