Following a narrow defeat at the hands of Fulham, Newcastle United’s win 1-0 win over Crystal Palace saw them move back into 8^th in the Premier League table.

However, the Magpies’ hard work earlier in the season would be undone by a run a six consecutive defeats, including 4-0 demolitions at the hands of Southampton and Manchester United.

Despite their woeful form, the Toon remained in the top half of the Premier League when they ended their slump by relegating Cardiff City with a 3-0 home victory. Alan Pardew’s side finished the season in 10^th after going down to nine men in their 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

Newcastle went into freefall for the final ten games for their 2014/5 campaign.

The Toon sat 11^th in the Premier League table with 35 points before a late Manchester United winner at St James’ Park began a run of eight straight defeats. As John Carver’s side sank down towards the bottom three, they finally halted the slump with a 1-1 draw at home to West Bromwich Albion.

The Magpies went into the final game of their season with West Ham United needing a point to secure Premier League survival. Goals from Moussa Sissoko and Jonas Gutierrez gave Carver’s men the points they required, and their first win since February.

Rafa Benitez was handed ten games to save Newcastle United from relegation to the Championship after a 3-1 defeat at home to AFC Bournemouth cost Steve McClaren his job.

The Spaniard endured a frustrating start to life on Tyneside, as they failed to beat Leicester City, Sunderland, Norwich City and Southampton, leaving his side six points adrift from safety.

However, the 3-1 drubbing at St Mary’s would be Newcastle’s 19^th – and final – defeat of the season. After registering a first victory over Swansea City, Benitez’s notably more organised outfit engineered results against Manchester City, Liverpool and Crystal Palace, to set up must-win showdown with already-relegated Aston Villa.

Newcastle were held to a goalless draw at Villa Park before Sunderland’s win over Everton in midweek confirmed their relegation. An emphatic final day win over Tottenham Hotspurs did offer hope heading into the summer.
