Jozo Simunovic has enjoyed a mixed spell at Celtic, but insists that he is happy at Parkhead.
Simunovic has arguably enjoyed a mixed spell with the Scottish Premiership champions following his £3 million move (via Daily Mail). On his day, there are few defenders in the division who look as impressive as the 24-year-old. But his form and fitness have been regular concerns throughout his time with the Hoops.
He has been heavily linked with moves away during his three years with the Bhoys. In 2016, he nearly joined Torino for £4 million, according to The Scottish Sun, while the Daily Mail reported 12 months ago that Celtic would consider selling the centre-back for £7 million as Burnley eyed a potential deal.
But after featuring in the League Cup final win at the weekend – which was actually his first appearance in more than a month – Simunovic insisted that he has no plans to leave Celtic after discussions with Brendan Rodgers.
“If I had really wanted to then I would have left Celtic. But I spoke to the gaffer and the president and they both said they wanted to keep me,” he said, as reported by the Daily Record. “I am happy here. I just want to play for Celtic. That is important for me at this stage of my career.
“I am happy at this club. I am happy to play under the pressure of chasing every trophy. It is simple. There is no other place I want to be.”
While some fans are unlikely to be convinced about Simunovic until he has enjoyed a lengthy run in the side where his form does not dip, keeping him at the club has to be considered a boost.
As reported by the Daily Record, there are question marks surrounding Dedryck Boyata’s future. And with Filip Benkovic only on loan, Simunovic could just need to bide his time before he is given a prolonged run in the side again.
