What a performance by Rangers on Sunday.

Steven Gerrard’s side thumped Motherwell 6-1 at Fir Park.

Fashion Sakala, who joined Rangers during the summer, bagged his first hat-trick in Scottish football.

James Tavernier, Glen Kamara and Kemar Roofe were also on target for the Ibrox outfit.

But one pundit, Stephen Craigan, has been left singing the praises of another player.

Every band needs a conductor and that’s the role Steven Davis played expertly yesterday afternoon.

The Northern Irishman wasn’t among the goalscorers, but he did pull all the strings.

Here’s what Craigan said about the evergreen midfielder, telling BBC Sport: “Fashion Sakala will get the headlines, strikers always do especially when they score a hat-trick, but the performance of Steven Davis has been a joy to watch.”

Negligent

At 36, Davis, who earns £13,000 per week, is slowing down a little.

Rangers have played 12 Scottish Premiership games this season and the former Southampton man has only managed eight starts – and 10 appearances overall in this competition.

But what a massive asset he continues to be for Gerrard nonetheless.

Being a midfielder himself during his playing days, nobody at Rangers will appreciate Davis more than his manager.

Having said that, there’s no getting away from his age and it would be negligent if nobody at Ibrox is planning for the long term, a future that can’t and won’t include Davis.

But for now, he remains a class act and long may it last from a Gers’ perspective.
