Tottenham-based journalist, Jonathan Veal, has posted on Twitter that Spurs fans gave Ryan Sessegnon a ‘big applause’ when he was substituted early against Wolves on Sunday.
With Spurs 2-0 down inside 18 minutes, Antonio Conte seemingly had enough and hooked off Sessegnon for Dejan Kulusevski after just 28 minutes.
Football London journalist, Alasdair Gold, added on Twitter that Conte had a chat with the dejected wing-back following his long walk around the Spurs stadium.
“Sessegnon the man to make way,” said Veal. “He’s getting a big applause but this will hurt him.”
Gold added: “Conte has a chat with the substituted Sessegnon as he returns to the dugout area after his long walk around the inside of the stadium.”
It was a Jose Mourinho-esque call from Conte and one that the Spurs faithful have seen before.
Rewind back to 2019 and Mourinho subbed Eric Dier after 29 minutes of their Champions League tie against Olympiakos.
The north London club were 2-0 down at that point also, and with Mourinho introducing Christian Eriksen into the fold for that game, they went on to win 4-2.
Oh, what Spurs fans would do to go back to those days because they were still in the Champions League.
And now those days seem a long, long away, as Conte well and truly understands the tough job he has in hand.
As for Sessegnon, he shouldn’t take such a call personally because it wasnt’ a case of his manager picking on him, but him just being the unlucky one.
