Speaking on the BBC’s Transfer Gossip Daily Podcast, Luke Edwards has been discussing the idea of Cristiano Ronaldo heading to Newcastle United on loan.

Marca reported on Tuesday morning that there is a clause in Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr contract that would allow him to join the Magpies on loan if they made the Champions League.

Of course, a Spanish newspaper discussing an English club and a Saudi club isn’t the most reliable of sources, but now, Edwards has said that a move is possible.

Edwards is a journalist that Newcastle fans will know to trust. He writes for the Telegraph, he’s known to have sources at the club and he’s broken numerous transfer stories, such as Nick Pope’s arrival in the past.

Now, the journalist has spoken to his sources at the club about Ronaldo, and he says that a loan move isn’t beyond the realms of possibility.

Ronaldo to Newcastle possible

Edwards shared what he knows about this rumour

“He’s not playing in Saudi Arabia, that is a tragic fall from grace. Now, let’s talk about the story. I checked this out with sources at Newcastle and it’s not beyond the realms of possibility because Newcastle are owned by PIF and this is a Saudi Arabian football club so anything can happen,” Edwards said.

“The brutal thing is though I don’t think Eddie Howe would want him, and that’s why Ronaldo is where he is right now.”

Don’t bother

Ronaldo signing for Newcastle would be huge for the club from a global commercial sense, but football isn’t just a business.

Indeed, this is a sport, a team sport, and you need to have a harmonious squad if you’re going to succeed.

That’s what Newcastle have done so well this season, but if they signed a player like Ronaldo, who has brought nothing but trouble over the past 12 months, he could undo all of the good work Eddie Howe’s side have done as of late.

Newcastle need to steer well clear of this one.
