Journalist: West Ham interested in Aston Villa man, played 90 minutes on Saturday

Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that West Ham United are considering a move for Aston Villa and England defender Tyrone Mings, who could be tempted to leave the Midlands club after being stripped of the captaincy.

Mings, 29, was replaced by John McGinn as Villa captain during the summer in a bold move made by Steven Gerrard. A move that has perhaps coincided with the signing of Diego Carlos. Mings was axed for the first game of the season.

However, the England centre-back returned on Saturday to play 90 minutes in an excellent 2-1 win over Everton. Meanwhile, Diego Carlos went off with an injury, while Ezri Konsa was only a substitute during the victory.

It will be interesting to see how Villa respond if West Ham do make an offer for Mings. One thing is for sure, West Ham desperately need options in the middle of the defence. Jones says West Ham are considering Mings this month.

“They’re not looking for a first-choice defender, they’re looking for someone that can fight to be part of that team. You could say, ‘Tyrone Mings is struggling with that battle himself for Aston Villa.

“It might just be that he needs a new club. He is one that West Ham are aware of and of thinking about, but we’ll have to see whether it actually turns into anything active,” Jones reported on Give Me Sport’s website.

Mings does have his critics. But right now, West Ham are in dire need of a central defender. Against Nottingham Forest, Ben Johnson started alongside Kurt Zouma as a makeshift centre-back. Declan Rice remained in midfield.

Nayef Aguerd, a new signing, picked up an injury in pre-season against Rangers and is likely to remain on the sidelines for another few weeks. Craig Dawson has a thigh issue, while Angelo Ogbonna is still on the road to recovery.

So, the Hammers need another option, especially with a European campaign on the horizon. Mings would be a decent signing. But given Villa paid £25million, he could be worth a whole lot more after becoming an England international.
