It is no secret that Newcastle are fans of James Maddison. The Magpies submitted a £45m bid back in August for the man who could miss out on England’s World Cup squad later today.
That was according to Luke Edwards of the Telegraph, and according to his colleague Matt Law of the same publication, the Leicester No.10 is likely to be left out of the trip to Qatar by Gareth Southgate.
In our view, it would be absurd if Maddison is left out of the squad, although it could end up working in Newcastle’s favour.
Maddison could push for Newcastle move
Well, the 25-year-old has been one of the best players in the Premier League this season, scoring six goals and providing four assists in 12 league outings for Leicester, despite their struggles.
Maddison has heavily outshone the likes of Mason Mount and Jack Grealish, although their places in the World Cup squad appear to be guaranteed, whereas the Leicester talisman is unfairly set to miss out.
As talented as Mount and Grealish are, it does feel as if big club bias carries some relevance should the two be picked ahead of Maddison, which is where Newcastle could benefit.
The Magpies are currently third in the Premier League, and if Southgate does leave the Leicester maestro out, he may feel it is time to leave the King Power Stadium and join a bigger club, in an attempt to be recognised.
For example, Southgate rarely used Grealish during his time at Aston Villa, but he is now a regular in the squad since his move to Manchester City.
If Maddison joins Newcastle in January, and goes on to help them qualify for the Champions League or Europa League, Southgate surely won’t be able to ignore him anymore.
Leicester expect Newcastle bid for Maddison
According to the Sunday Mirror, Brendan Rodgers is bracing himself for Eddie Howe to make another move for Maddison in January.
To add to that, respected journalist Ben Jacobs told Give Me Sport that Newcastle are prepared to pay well above the attacker’s market value if it brings him to Tyneside.
Newcastle seem well placed to bring Maddison to St James’ Park this winter, and their chances of securing a deal will surely be boosted if Southgate leaves him out of the World Cup squad.
