Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Duncan Castles has shared what people in Italy have told him about Fabio Paratici and Paulo Fonseca’s relationship amid rumours they’re both going to be hired by Tottenham.

Both Paratici and Fonseca have been working in Serie A for the past few years, and they’re bound to have crossed paths a number of times during their spells at Roma and Juventus.

However, people in Italy have told Castles that Paratici and Fonseca aren’t particularly close, claiming that this pairing is a marriage of convenience.

What’s been said?

Castles shared what he’s heard from people in Italy about Fonseca and Paratici.

“I think it’s interesting that they’ve gone for Fonseca. Talking to people in Italy, they tell me that the relationship between Paratici and Fonseca is not a particularly close one, and it’s very much a marriage of convenience because he had to get someone in to get the process of starting for next season going. He’s not a bad coach, he’s done well in individual games in the Champions League, he did well at Shakhtar Donetsk, winning the Ukrainian league three times, albeit with the most powerful squad there, but he built a team that played good football,” Castles said.

Marriage of convenience

It’s certainly strange to hear that Fonseca and Paratici aren’t close, considering the fact that Paratici has reportedly played a big part in this appointment.

Given the fact that the likes of Max Allegri, Maurizio Sarri and Antonio Conte, three managers Paratici has worked closely with, have all been available at different junctures during Spurs’ manager hunt, it’s strange that Tottenham have opted to go for someone he doesn’t seem to know all that well.

As Castles says, it’s a marriage of convenience, but only time will tell whether or not it’s the right move.
