Tottenham Hotspur have been heavily linked with Vincent Kompany in recent weeks.

Spurs are currently looking for a new manager after parting company with Antonio Conte in March.

Earlier this month, The Sun reported that Tottenham had made Kompany their No. 1 candidate.

Since then, Julian Nagelsmann has reportedly become Spurs’ main target after snubbing Chelsea.

Nonetheless, links between Tottenham and Kompany remain.

The Belgian has made a name for himself as a coach in England thanks to his heroics at Burnley.

Kompany has turned the Clarets into a ‘Man City-lite’ as they stormed to the Championship title.

Dean Jones has now spoken to GiveMeSport about what he has heard about Spurs’ interest in the 37-year-old.

He spoke of how impressed Tottenham are by Kompany’s “very unique outlook”.

“I think the most surprising person they have seriously considered is Vincent Kompany,” began Jones.

“But what I have discovered is why he really is so highly thought of. Yes, of course part of this is that Burnley won promotion.

“But within football circles there has already been admiration for the tactical implementations he used in his time with Anderlecht.

“He was very adaptable and creative in his team structure and playing patterns.

“And one contact close to Spurs said they are impressed by the fact he has a very unique outlook on how to play and that’s why he has been considered.

“My feeling is he will stay at Burnley for now and we know there are a few other very good people being checked out by Spurs in this process so he was only part of the expirations.

“But Burnley have a very good manager and will do well to hold onto him long-term.”

Our view

Kompany has well and truly shown his credentials in English football.

However, this summer is probably too early for him to take the Spurs job.

Kompany has already got Burnley back into the top flight with the team he has built.

It’s very much the logical option for him to stay put and see what he can do in the Premier League.

In addition, Spurs and Burnley will have contrasting expectations next season.

For the Clarets, surviving relegation will likely be the bottom line in their first campaign back in the top flight.

Meanwhile, Tottenham will be eager for top four and silverware, or at least a great cup run.

Kompany will be under intense pressure at Spurs, and at this stage in his career, he’s better off staying put.
