Last week it was reported that a joint Saudi-Qatari consortium are preparing a bid to buy Liverpool Football Club.

Of course, after news like this emerges, the big question is; who is this group?

A Saudi-Qatari consortium does sound rather enticing, but we have no idea who is behind this bid quite yet.

Unfortunately, it seems as though we may not find out for a little while either.

Indeed, the journalist who broke this story, David Lynch, has been speaking to RedMen TV, and he says that he’s spoken to people close to this situation who claim that these prospective new owners don’t want to reveal their identities just yet due to the fact they wouldn’t want to be seen to fail if the takeover doesn’t go through.

In the dark

Lynch shared what he’s heard about these potential owners not wanting to give much away.

“The full details aren’t exactly clear to me who the two parties are because that’s the way these stories come out. The people I speak to are very close to this situation, and it’s not a situation where they want to announce who they are yet,” Lynch said.

“I think that is down to the fact billionaires never want to be seen to fail in these situations. You won’t get exact clarity on who is involved, but you would suggest that because of where these bidders are coming from there will be some sort of ties to the state.

“There are varying degrees, the Public Investment Fund at Newcastle is clearly just a government vehicle for investing and spreading the Saudi name, it is possible to have something completely different for that, but we will have to see.”

Who are they?

These prospective bidders may want to keep their identity quiet for now, but it is important that Liverpool fans know who they’re dealing with before a takeover is brokered.

While this reported bid is exciting in a way, a fanbase like Liverpool’s need to have a say in what happens next.

Indeed, if there are links to the Saudi or Qatari state, then this needs to be transparent because a club like Liverpool with such a clear political and social identity has to make sure it doesn’t stray away from its roots.

This is certainly a situation to keep an eye on.
