Journalist shares two words a ‘senior figure’ at Newcastle used to describe this transfer window

Speaking on the BBC’s Transfer Gossip Daily Podcast, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has been speaking about Newcastle’s transfer window so far.

The Magpies came into January with massive expectations. They’re now the richest club in the world and a squad overhaul was expected.

However, here we are, just a few days away from the deadline and the Tyneside club have only signed two players.

Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood are two decent additions, but they’re not what you would call superstar signings.

However, Newcastle’s lack of activity hasn’t been for the lack of trying. A lot of work has been going on behind the scenes, but the January window isn’t easy.

In fact, Edwards claims that a senior figure at Newcastle has summed the winter window up in just two words.

What’s Edwards said?

The journalist spoke about Newcastle’s window and what a senior figure said to him.

“They haven’t actually closed what I would describe as a difficult transfer yet. They keep going close, they’ve been close for two weeks but nothing has happened. We might look back on this in five days’ time and say you were worried for no reason, but the pressure is really on. I said the pressure was on two days ago, and nothing has really happened in the last two days,” Edwards said.

“They’ve had a bid for Bruno Guimaraes supposedly accepted, but Lyon released that statement saying a bid hasn’t been accepted. It’s all very scattergun, it’s chaotic and we have to call it for what it is, it is chaotic. Tensions are rising behind the scenes, I don’t think I’m being melodramatic saying that. I spoke to one senior figure at the club and they actually said it’s been an ‘absolute nightmare’ this month with clubs moving the goalposts, agents leading them on and being linked with players they actually have no interest in at all.”

Failure to prepare

Newcastle have all the money in the world, but it has to be said, they’ve come into this transfer window underprepared.

Indeed, they don’t have a Sporting Director in place, while Amanda Staveley is acting as the club’s Chief Executive.

Newcastle needed to get this window right. After all, relegation is potentially at stake, but with just a few days to go, they’re at risk of squandering this chance to bolster their squad and stay in the Premier League.
