Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Ian McGarry has shared some insight on Steven Gerrard’s contract with Aston Villa.
Gerrard is the new Villa boss, but despite the fact he’s only been in the job for a couple of days, people are already talking about his exit strategy at Villa Park.
Indeed, it’s widely expected that Gerrard will be joining Liverpool after his spell with Villa, and he’s even had a clause inserted into his Aston Villa contract that would allow him to leave the Midlands club in 2024, which, coincidentally, is when Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool deal is up.
What’s been said?
McGarry shared what he knows about Gerrard.
“We also understand, and this is significant, that in the contract he has signed with Villa, that runs until 2025, there is a break in that contract in 2024. Not coincidentally, the time that Klopp is expected to leave Anfield. There will be a defined compensation, so Liverpool know exactly how much they’d have to pay to trigger that clause and it would be no more than around £5m,” McGarry said.

Inevitable
Villa have appointed a very exciting manager in Gerrard, but it seems as though he won’t be the long-term gaffer at Villa Park.
Indeed, it seems almost inevitable that Gerrard will eventually be Anfield-bound, and he seems to have that in mind already.
Of course, as a consummate professional, Gerrard won’t let his Liverpool-related ambitions affect the work he does at Villa, but fans of the Midlands club may have to brace themselves for his departure in a few years’ time.
