Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Ian McGarry has shared an update on Tottenham ace Harry Kane’s potential move to Manchester United.

United are reportedly very keen on signing the England striker this summer after he made it clear that he wanted to leave Spurs.

Kane is yet to hand in a formal transfer request, but United have reportedly made it clear that they’re willing to compensate him for any loss of earnings that he would incur by handing in an official transfer request.

“He has not yet requested a transfer in a formal sense. It is our information that Manchester United have made it clear to Harry Kane that should he need to push for a transfer, I.E asking for a transfer in an official sense, which would disbar his entitlement to a payoff on his current contract, which is reportedly £6m net per year currently until 2024,” McGarry said.

“Meaning that he would lose out on £18m if he asked for a transfer. These are the ways in which football works, and Manchester United are prepared to compensate him for that loss of earnings with a signing on fee which could be paid over the length of his contract.

“Obviously he would expect, and be offered around twice his current salary at Tottenham, so not only would he be earning more, but he’d get some sort of compensation fee for the wages that he gives up should he force his way out of Tottenham Hotspur, and that could be a very powerful way of doing things for Kane because he has risked a lot in making it public his desire to leave Spurs.”

Kane handing in a transfer request and risking the £18m that is owed to him on the remainder of his contract would be a big statement of intent.

Of course, Kane hasn’t done that yet, but it seems as though he could be tempted to after Manchester United’s proposal, especially if they’re willing to give him that £18m signing bonus.

The stumbling block here would of course be whether or not United are willing, and able, to meet Daniel Levy’s asking price for his star man.

Kane’s situation is certainly one to keep an eye on in the coming months.
