Speaking on the BBC Transfer Gossip Daily Podcast, Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards has been talking about Newcastle’s transfer activity.
Edwards claimed on Twitter earlier this week that there was an unnamed player who was close to joining Newcastle alongside Diego Carlos, and now, he’s doubled down on this claim on this podcast.
However, unfortunately, Edwards doesn’t have a name for us, although, he is led to believe that this signing could be a highly-coveted midfielder.
What’s Edwards said?
The journalist shared what he knows about the Magpies’ transfer plans.
“I have some contacts at Newcastle and I talk to people. Diego Carlos is fairly advanced now, Newcastle are increasingly confident of signing him this week, and there is another player, but nobody will tell me who it is. I think it is a midfielder, that is all I’m going to say,” Edwards said.
“This is the reality of the window, nobody wants somebody like me revealing who they want to sign. Obviously I have contacts and I talk to people, but this one is a closely-guarded secret and normally when that happens it’s somebody that a lot of clubs would be interested in if they knew he would be available, so it could be an exciting signing.”

Exciting
This is a very exciting, albeit mysterious, update.
Understandably, the question we have is, who is this mystery player?
It’s very rare that teams can keep any signings under wraps these days, but it seems as though Newcastle are somehow managing to keep this quiet.
Aston Villa managed it in the summer with Danny Ings’ signing coming from out of nowhere, and it sounds as though a sudden announcement from Newcastle could be coming in the next few days.
