Speaking on the Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast, Alasdair Gold has shared an update on Spurs’ pursuit of a new goalkeeper.
The north London outfit are apparently in the market for a new glovesman, and according to some reports, Antonio Conte is keen to bring in a homegrown goalie at the club.
According to Gold, Spurs have already started the process of sounding out potential new keepers, stating that they have a list of around three or four names, and one of the names on that list is Sam Johnstone – with Spurs apparently favourites to land the goalie.
What’s been said?
Gold shared what he knows about Spurs’ pursuit of a new goalkeeper.
“Yes, I would say it’s a sensible transfer that Spurs are looking to do, 29-years-old, England international, available on a free, from what I understand Spurs are favourites to get it done, but, of course, nothing can be signed until May for any domestic free transfers. From what I understand he’s on a list of three or four names for that backup goalkeeping role, and Spurs are in pole position to bring him in,” Gold said.

Sensible transfer
As Gold says, this is a sensible move, even if it’s not an absolute blockbuster.
Signing an England international on a free is never bad business, and let’s be honest, any goalkeeper that Spurs bring in would have a huge job on their hands when it comes to usurping Hugo Lloris.
Johnstone is a handy goalkeeper, and perhaps more importantly, he’s homegrown, and if Pierluigi Gollini isn’t sticking around, this will open up a gap in Spurs’ squad for them to bring in a more high-profile non-homegrown player.
