Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, journalist Duncan Castles has been speaking about some of Tottenham’s outgoings, namely Toby Alderweireld.

Alderweireld was sold to Qatari outfit Al-Duhail this summer for a reported fee of £13m, which looked like a great price for the defender once dubbed ‘fantastic’ by Jose Mourinho.

However, Castles is led to believe that the fee for Alderweireld was much lower than was originally reported.

What’s been said?

Castles was speaking about some of the outgoings at Spurs this summer.

“Every one of the outfield players they signed was 23 or younger. There have been radical changes, also with the players they moved out. Serge Aurier’s contract was cancelled, Toby Alderweireld has gone to Qatar, there was money involved in that deal, but certainly a much lower fee than was initially reported in that deal, while Moussa Sissoko went to Watford,” Castles said.

Too good to be true

£13m for a 32-year-old defender seemed like a deal that was too good to be true, and it looks as though it may have been.

To be honest, this update makes sense, spending such a fee on Alderweireld at this point in his career would have been excessive, so the fact that he moved for cheaper than was reported isn’t too much of a surprise.

Of course, the question we now have is, how much did Alderweireld actually cost? Castles didn’t share a figure, but perhaps that’s something that we’ll learn in the coming weeks and months.
