Speaking on the Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast, journalist Alasdair Gold has shared what he’s been hearing about Japhet Tanganga at Tottenham,
Tanganga was one of the stars of the opening weekend of the Premier League season. The 22-year-old played way above his years as he stifled Manchester City’s attack, playing a huge part in Spurs’ 1-0 win.
As you can imagine, people within the club were very impressed by Tanganga, and they were surprised by how ready he looked to play at this level.
What’s been said?
Gold gave an update on the youngster.
“He was so good and for someone who doesn’t like bigging up individuals, for Nuno to say after the game that he was ‘huge’ says it all about how good he was. What a lovely moment for him when he was substituted and because he came off the other end of the pitch he got a little half lap of honour, and it was just lovely,” Gold said.
“I seriously think, well I don’t even think, this is what I’m understanding from people I’m speaking to within the club. A week ago Japhet Tanganga was likely to go out on loan, but he was so good, and he surprised some people within the club with just how ready he is. There’s serious talk now about whether or not this is the guy who could make a serious play for the right-back spot.”

Earned the right
People within the club believe Tanganga could be a serious contender at right-back, and it has to be said that he’s earned the right to start there.
The 22-year-old put in a blinding performance against the best team in the country, and you can’t do that unless you’re a special player.
Tanganga has taken people off guard with his brilliance, but he’s blossoming at the perfect time for Tottenham.
