Speaking on the Kenn7 YouTube channel, Times journalist Paul Joyce has been speaking about Andy Robertson and his role at Liverpool.

The Scottish defender has long-been one of the Reds’ most important players, but this summer he was handed a more prevalent role at Anfield, joining the club’s so-called ‘leadership group’ in the summer.

Indeed, Joyce claims that Robertson was trusted to enter this inner circle upon the departure of Georginio Wijnaldum.

What’s been said?

Joyce shared what he knows about Robertson.

“I think the other player for me who, people recognise he’s a good player, but Andy Robertson has stepped up another level this season. He joined the captain’s group, the leadership group this summer when Wijnaldum left and he so often sets the tone for Liverpool in matches,” Joyce said.

Natural leader

The most surprising thing about this is that Robertson wasn’t already in the Reds’ leadership group before Wijnaldum left.

The Scot has been at Anfield for a number of years now, he’s a big character and he’s even the captain of his national team.

Luckily for Liverpool, the Reds have an abundance of players who could be described as brilliant leaders – Jordan Henderson, Virgil van Dijk and James Milner being the most notable.

Robertson has now joined that cohort, and it’s fair to say that it’s a role he’s very much suited to.

Robertson is a born leader and now he’s been given extra responsibility at club level.
