Speaking on the Talking Transfers Podcast, Graeme Bailey has been discussing Newcastle United and their plan to give Kieran Trippier a new contract.

The Magpies’ squad is in healthy shape right now when it comes to contract situations. All of their key players are tied down to long-term deals, and there’s nothing to panic about right this second.

However, Newcastle under this new ownership aren’t the type of team to rest on their laurels and they’re being pro-active in their approach to renewing contracts.

According to Bailey, Newcastle are already planning on offering Kieran Trippier a new deal, despite the fact his current terms run until 2024.

Trippier’s new deal

Bailey shared what he knows about Trippier potentially getting a new contract.

“Newcastle have their squad tied up nicely at the moment, when you look at their squad there aren’t many players who need new deals right now, but Kieran Trippier is one of them. He’s a huge fan favourite, there’s a real fondness for him and the fans love him. He’s played very well to be fair and he’s led by example and from what I’m told they’re considering a new deal for him,” Bailey said.

Earned it

Giving a new deal to a 32-year-old a year and a half before his contract expires may seem like a bit of a risky move, but Trippier has more than earned these new terms.

The right-back has been arguably Newcastle’s best player since he signed back in January, and he certainly deserves to be rewarded for his brilliant form.

However, Newcastle need to be savvy when it comes to handing him a new deal.

As good as Trippier is, he’s no spring chicken, and if they give him too long of a deal, by the time 2024 or 2025 rolls around they could be stuck with a player who is way over the hill.

Trippier deserves a new contract, but, in our view, this should only be a one-year extension.
