Speaking on The Redmen TV Podcast, Neil Jones has been discussing Liverpool and their hunt for a new midfielder this summer.
The Reds were in the market for a new midfielder in the window – eventually signing Arthur Melo on loan from Juventus, but Jurgen Klopp made it clear in a recent press conference that Liverpool had another target in mind who decided to join another club.
It was largely speculated that Aurelien Tchouameni was the player in question. After all, Liverpool reportedly had bids rejected for the Frenchman this summer, but according to Jones, Klopp was alluding to Konrad Laimer rather than Tchouameni.

Jones spoke about Liverpool and Laimer.
“I think it was Konrad Laimer he was talking about. I did report that the day before the window closed that Liverpool had given up on Laimer. He ticked a lot of boxes,” Jones said.
“He had a year left on his contract so it all fed into this. I don’t think he was target number one, two or three in the summer, but as it developed they thought it could be a nice little deal and a deal that works and he may have been cheap enough to justify it. His agent had a relationship with Keita and Mane so there was a lot of parts to it, but the vibe was that Leipzig weren’t after selling him and the player himself had decided to sit on his contract and join Bayern next summer.”
“Specifically in that press conference I think he was speaking about Konrad Laimer, but it was probably a bit of both (Laimer and Tchouameni).”
Shame
It’s a real shame that Liverpool seem to have missed out on Laimer to Bayern Munich.
The Austrian would’ve been an almost-perfect fit for the Reds’ midfield. He’s an all-action energetic player who can also cover at right-back if needed.
Laimer would’ve been an absolute gem for Jurgen Klopp’s side, but sadly, this transfer wasn’t to be this summer.
