Speaking on The Done Deal Show, Ben Jacobs has been discussing the recent stories about Kylian Mbappe potentially joining Liverpool.
It’s been the biggest story of the week. Kylian Mbappe wants to leave PSG, and Liverpool are the only club the French giants really want to sell to.
There are signs pointing towards the potential of Mbappe heading to Anfield, but according to Jacobs, any such deal is dead in the water unless the Reds can secure Champions League football next season – which, given Liverpool’s poor start this term, is looking rather unlikely.
Liverpool need Champions League to stand a chance with Mbappe
Jacobs shared what he knows about this situation.
“Let’s not forget Chelsea almost signed Mbappe when he was very young. The Liverpool interest is historical and as a result they will always be linked, but they will have to break their financial planning and mould to get a deal over the line. For a player of that quality they could enter the race, but they have some work to do in the Premier League because if they don’t have Champions League football they will stand zero chance of signing Mbappe come the summer,” Jacobs said.
Game changing
If Liverpool sign Mbappe off the back of a top four finish this season, this may well be one of the most important campaigns in the Reds’ recent history.
Yes, they don’t look likely to challenge for a league title this time around, but if a top four finish comes with an Mbappe-shaped prize, it would be greater than any silverware the Reds could win.
Make no mistake about it, Mbappe is going to be one of the best footballers on the planet for the next decade, and having him in your team almost guarantees a modicum of success.
This could be a game-changing signing, and Liverpool would be wise to pursue this one – but in order to do that, they need to finish in the top four.
