Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, journalist Ian McGarry has been speaking about Newcastle United and James Tarkowski.
We’ve seen so many links and rumours about Newcastle making signings next month, but now, McGarry claims he knows who Eddie Howe’s number one target is.
Indeed, the journalist claims that Howe is keen to bring in a new centre-half, and Burnley’s Tarkowski is at the top of his list.
What’s been said about Tarkowski?
McGarry claimed that Howe is extremely keen on the Burnley defender.
“He wants an English warrior type centre-half and we understand that James Tarkowski of Burnley is the player he has identified as his primary target with regards to filling that position. That would make sense to me, he’s already in the north of England. He’s broken into the England squad and he’s a natural leader who would bring a sense of commitment and decision making and command to a defence that has looked fragile,” McGarry said.
Great move
This may not be the most inspiring transfer of all-time, but Newcastle would be getting a very reliable defender if they signed Tarkowski.
The Magpies have had way too many defensive issues this season, and bringing in Tarkowski would go a long way towards fixing them.
As McGarry says, this is more than just a sturdy centre-half, this is a player who is a leader who could bring a genuine steel to a very fragile backline.
It remains to be seen whether or now Howe can get his man, but if Newcastle can get this deal over the line it could be a truly transformative signing.
