Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Ian McGarry has claimed that Chris Wilder is being eyed up by Newcastle as a potential replacement for Steve Bruce.
Bruce’s Newcastle future has long-been the subject of speculation, but it seems as though the gaffer is now on thin ice at St James’ Park, with Wilder being earmarked as a possible appointment if they lose to Brighton this weekend.
“We bring you news now of the possibility, which has been talked about, of the departure of Newcastle United’s manager Steve Bruce, a Manchester United legend himself, and the possibility of him being replaced if they lose to Brighton this coming weekend,” McGarry said.
“Chris Wilder, who departed Sheffield United after a long-running and antagonistic relationship with the club’s hierarchy over transfers and investment, who is still waiting for his lawyers to agree a compensation package, we understand is in the running to replace Steve Bruce.”
The Brighton game already had incredibly high-stakes attached to it, but it has even more significance now.
It seems as though the hierarchy at St James’ Park may make a big decision if they lose to the Seagulls, and apparently, Wilder is the man they’ll look towards if they are beaten at the weekend.
The 53-year-old would have a big job on his hands, but let’s not forget this is a former LMA Manager of the Year winner and a man who took Sheffield United from League One to the Premier League.
Wilder would certainly be an interesting appointment at Newcastle.
