Speaking on The Redmen TV YouTube channel, journalist Neil Jones has claimed Saul Niguez wanted wages that would have made him Liverpool’s highest-paid player amid links to the Anfield outfit.

Earlier in the window, Liverpool had a good look at Saul, but unfortunately, the move wasn’t a goer due to the fact he wanted to be paid a ludicrous amount.

Jones says the wages Saul wanted would have made him the reds’ highest-paid player prior to the recent contract extensions.

That means he would have been paid more than the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane if he joined the club.

What’s been said?

Jones shared what he knows about Saul.

“It wasn’t a starter. The wages were huge. I’ve said this, the wages he was asking for or that he would be asking for would make him the highest-paid player at Liverpool. Actually, maybe not now given a couple of contract extensions that have happened, but at the time it would have made him,” Jones said.

Not worth it

As good as a player Saul is, he’s not worth breaking your wage structure for.

Liverpool are one of the best teams in the world at managing their wage budget, and breaking the bank for a midfielder who may not even be a guaranteed starter every week would have been foolish.

It would have been great to see Saul at Liverpool, but we can absolutely understand why the Reds have opted against this move.
