Transfer expert Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that Rangers could still sign Manchester City wonderkid James McAtee on deadline day. The teenager has been linked with a move north of the border this month.
McAtee, 19, has broken into Manchester City’s senior side on three occasions under Pep Guardiola – having sparkled in the club’s Under-23 side. Playing 44 times for the 23’s, he has scored 23 goals from midfield.
Not only that, but the England Under-20 star has also laid on a huge 16 assists from attacking midfield. McAtee is an enormous talent and Rangers could be seen as the ideal place to help aid his development this term.
The Mail say Rangers – and Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa – are among the clubs eyeing McAtee. Jones responded on GMS, when asked if Rangers could get him on deadline day: “There’s a possibility that one happens.”
McAtee to Rangers: Beating Villa to Manchester City star a real coup
If Rangers can get a deal done for McAtee, even if only a dry loan, it would be a stunning signing. Amad Diallo showed against Ross County that he is going to be a brilliant recruit – having a hand in two of his side’s three goals.
That is despite Diallo only really getting consistent game time in Premier League 2 – like McAtee. You would be hard-pushed to find a better, regular player in PL2 than McAtee. But competition from Villa will be fierce.
Villa are showing huge ambition – though a loan to Rangers would instantly give McAtee game time with Ianis Hagi injured and Gio van Bronckhorst preferring to play with a 10. A superb signing, if Rangers can get it done.
