According to Fabrizio Romano, RB Leipzig have agreed to sign Orjan Nyland after Aston Villa sold him in 2020.

Orjan Ny-lands on his feet after Aston Villa exit

Well, with all due respect, the Norway international has a fantastic agent.

After Dean Smith offloaded Nyland in 2020, very few people at Villa Park would have expected to see him starting in the Champions League just two years later, especially after unspectacular stints at Norwich, Bournemouth and Reading.

However, that now looks likely to happen.

Romano believes Nyland is heading to Germany for a medical with RB Leipzig, where he will become the new No.1 after Peter Gulacsi suffered a serious knee injury in the 3-1 Champions League win over Celtic.

The 32-year-old has been a free agent since he was released by Reading at the end of last season, and even he surely could not have expected to be starting in the Champions League just months later.

Should RB Leipzig progress out of the Group Stage, he could even find himself facing the likes of Lionel Messi, Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland with Gulacsi set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Aston Villa fans will be baffled by Orjan Nyland update

To the uninformed, it will look as if Aston Villa made a mistake in letting Nyland leave.

However, if you are among the uninformed, we can assure you the Villans were right to offload the Norwegian.

Nyland made 36 appearances for Aston Villa, conceding 53 goals as a veteran Pepe Reina eventually took his place in the starting XI, which spoke volumes seeing as the Spaniard was far from convincing himself.

The Norwegian was still a popular man at Villa Park and embodied the type of character supporters want to see from their players, although his lack of confidence – and consequential errors – made him a liability on the pitch.

Hopefully, Nyland can put a difficult couple of years behind him and become a star in the Champions League.
