Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that Newcastle are monitoring the situation of Lille midfielder Amadou Onana, after West Ham saw an offer of £20million rejected by the Ligue 1 club this summer.
Newcastle have, of course, just done some major business with the French outfit – signing Sven Botman for a fee well north of £30million. The defender finally moves to Tyneside after months of Newcastle trying to get him.
Now, he could immediately reunite with Onana. It comes after West Ham saw a £20million bid rejected for the 20-year-old star, who only joined Lille last summer from German club Hamburg. He already has caps for Belgium.

With West Ham potentially considering a second, improved offer for Onana – Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that Newcastle are also looking at the 6ft 4in Belgian. It is unclear how much Lille want for their midfield wonderkid.
“I know that with Onana, Newcastle have been keeping an eye on him too. So, if they were to look for somebody who’s not especially high-profile, but somebody of a specific style; a defensive midfielder, they might come in for him too.”
Newcastle monitoring Onana situation after West Ham offer
Onana is a top talent. A player considered one of the best young midfielders in French football. So, for what could be a fee less than £30million, it is of no surprise to see Premier League clubs looking to bring him in.
What is best for Onana at this stage? He has only spent a season at Lille and while he did clock up 41 appearances, it might be more-suited to his development if he remains another term. But the Premier League will be tempting.
