Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that Newcastle United have emerged as an option for Manchester United outcast Donny van de Beek ahead of the January window – despite the Dutchman rejecting Newcastle for Everton last January.

The 25-year-old has managed just 19 minutes of football this season spread across three substitute appearances. While that has been down to injury, it is hard to see the Netherlands ace really getting any more game time at United.

The signing of Casemiro, the form of Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes, and the other options of Fred and Scott McTominay, see him firmly planted south in the pecking order. It comes after returning from a poor loan at Everton.

He managed just seven appearances for Everton. It comes, after choosing the Toffees over Newcastle. The Telegraph says he chose Everton over Newcastle, given the Toon were closer to the relegation zone. That was a poor decision.

Transfer expert Jones says that van de Beek is likely to be looking at an Old Trafford exit. The introduction of Erik ten Had as manager has not helped his cause as many might have hoped. Newcastle are deemed as a potential option.

“Newcastle is one option. They want a central midfielder, still, and I think he might fit the bill,” Jones said, when discussing the future of the man that is currently earning an enormous £100,000 a week at Old Trafford.

Newcastle do need a midfielder. They need a player that can allow Bruno Guimaraes to get forward and score goals – like he did against Brentford on Saturday. Jonjo Shelvey remains out injured and will be until almost the new year.

Sean Longstaff has come in in place of England international Shelvey and performed admirably. He has a couple of months to convince Eddie Howe that the Toon do not need another midfielder. Joe Willock is keeping Joelinton out.

But ultimately, with the spending power Newcastle have, they will eventually bring in a midfielder. Will van de Beek be a player they target – given his failure at Old Trafford? It might be that they look elsewhere, other than the Dutchman.
