Writing in his column for Caught Offside, Fabrizio Romano has been discussing Darwin Nunez amid ongoing links to Liverpool.
The Uruguayan looks like he’s headed to Anfield, and there is plenty of intrigue surrounding this player.
Indeed, while the attacker will be a club-record signing, many Liverpool fans may not know too much about him. After all, he’s never played in a top-five European league.
Romano has given some insight into the type of player Nunez is, and the journalist states that the Liverpool scouting department believe he’s a similar player to Edinson Cavani.
What’s the story?
Romano gave an update on Nunez.
“My impression is that Liverpool’s priority is Darwin Nunez, whereas Manchester United are in a longer rebuilding process which includes the priority of a defender, a midfielder, and then a new striker,” Romano wrote.
“I think Darwin can slightly change the way Liverpool play. Certainly he is a more traditional striker than Roberto Firmino or Diogo Jota. In the Liverpool scouting department they have always considered him as a similar type of centre-forward to Edinson Cavani. That’s certainly a compliment to the player, but it will be interesting to see how it might change the way Jurgen Klopp’s side play if a deal is completed.”
Top player
If Nunez proves to be even half as good as Cavani then Liverpool will have a top player on their hands.
Yes, the former PSG striker hasn’t had the best of seasons for Manchester United, but with over 400 career goals to his name, Cavani is undoubtedly one of the greatest strikers of the 21st century.
If Nunez can follow in his fellow countryman’s footsteps, he’ll be an absolute star, and even though £85m is a lot of money, that would be a snip if he can score at a rate similar to a prime Cavani.
