According to Dean Jones, Mauricio Pochettino is interested in replacing Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa.

Pochettino could replace Gerrard at Aston Villa

Well, this would be quite the appointment at Villa Park.

Pochettino – who has won 292 games in management – has been unemployed since PSG handed him his P45 back in July, despite winning the Ligue 1 title.

Now, the Argentine would be keen to take the reins at Aston Villa, if Gerrard receives a P45 of his own.

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones said: “It might not be ethical to go digging for a new manager while the other one is still in place, but we’ve said for a while that we understand Pochettino is interested in this job. That is, for me, something that Aston Villa cannot ignore.”

We agree.

It baffles us that nobody leapt to hire Pochettino immediately after he left the Parc des Princes, given his strong pedigree across Europe.

Admittedly, the South American probably hasn’t won enough silverware for his efforts in management, but his work at Southampton and Tottenham – both of whom were lifted by his coaching skills – cannot be ignored.

In those respective roles, Pochettino inherited groups full of individual talent – like Gerrard has at Villa Park – in a rudderless environment, before eventually steering them to better days with a clear strategy focused on youth.

With the likes of Jacob Ramsey and other bright prospects emerging at Aston Villa, along with experienced stars such as Danny Ings and Philippe Coutinho, we feel Pochettino would thrive in the Midlands.

Aston Villa must hire Pochettino if Gerrard fails to beat Fulham

In our view, if Gerrard fails to beat Fulham at Craven Cottage tomorrow, it should be curtains.

The 2022/23 campaign looked set to be an exciting one for the Villans, but with each passing week, Aston Villa are wasting precious points.

A manager like Pochettino surely won’t be unemployed for much longer, and a better opportunity could easily arise soon if Aston Villa do not pounce.

Therefore, if anything other than three points follows tomorrow’s trip to London, Gerrard must be sacked.
