It looks like Liverpool have a major fight on their hands to sign Nuno Mendes this summer.
Calciomercato reported in March that Manchester City were, like Jurgen Klopp’s side, very keen on bringing the 18-year-old Sporting sensation to the Etihad Stadium.
At 18, Mendes, a full Portugal international, is one of the most exciting young players in Europe and a £60 million release clause reflects his potential.
But Liverpool also have another potential suitor to worry about.
According to Eurosport‘s Dean Jones, Real Madrid and Manchester United have also made scouting reports on the full-back throughout the campaign.
But rather excitingly, the report adds that people inside football believe that Mendes is going to have a lot of people talking about him on a regular basis ‘over the next decade’.
It certainly looks like Mendes has a massive future in the game and it’ll be fascinating to see if Michael Edwards and Klopp genuinely do want him.
But it must be pointed out that Liverpool already have one of the sport’s best left-backs in the form of Andy Robertson, who turned 27 only last month.
He is only coming into the prime of his career now and it doesn’t make sense for the Anfield club to spend £60 million on an understudy, unless the Scot were to leave.
