CBS Sports reporter Ben Jacobs has told Give Me Sport that Liverpool will turn their attention to Diogo Jota and make a new deal for the Portuguese star ‘a priority’. Jota was excellent for the Reds last term.

Jota, 25, joined Liverpool in 2020 and was the man to break what seemed an impenetrable front three at Anfield of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino. He has scored 34 goals in 85 appearances, despite only starting 58 of those.

The signing of Darwin Nunez might prove a bit of a concern to Jota. Despite his excellent form, he is seemingly not going to be first choice when it comes to Jurgen Klopp picking his best front three at Anfield.

Indeed, Danny Murphy has explained his sympathy for Jota – given the signing of Nunez. But Liverpool still see the ex-Wolves attacker as important – and have made a new contract for the attacker a ‘priority’.

“Liverpool will also look to offer Diogo Jota improved terms as a matter of priority. Most of the other names currently being linked with Liverpool are just rumour or agent talk with little substance,” Jacobs reports.

Liverpool turn attention to Jota: New deal a priority

Keeping his squad happy has been a crucial part of Jurgen Klopp’s success as Liverpool manager. The ability to produce a family-like feel, rotate players, but still be successful and use his best players regularly.

Jota is now likely to be first reserve. Nunez is clearly going to start with Salah and Luis Diaz either side of him. An exciting attack, but it leaves the likes of Jota, Firmino, Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho on the fringes.

Of those four names, Jota has cause to feel aggrieved. It might be that he wants assurances regarding his playing time – but a new deal and a deserved pay rise on his current £90k-a-week wages may help him take his mind off of it.
