Whether Tottenham Hotspur qualify for the Champions League or not, summer reinforcements are definitely needed.

Antonio Conte’s outfit are fourth in the Premier League standings and on course to get back into Europe’s elite competition.

Whatever happens, the Italian needs a lot of new players and most of them in defence.

One player linked with a move to Spurs is Stefan de Vrij [Inter Live], who won a Serie A title under Conte last season.

And if a journalist from Italy is accurate, there’s definitely reasons to be cheerful.

According to Alfredo Pedulla, the 30-year-old powerhouse won’t be signing a new contract at San Siro.

The Netherlands international is out of contract in 2023 and if he has signalled that he won’t be extending his existing deal then the Italian outfit will be under pressure to sell this summer.

And that is surely a positive development for Tottenham and other reported targets.

He said: “De Vrij will not renew his contract; we’ll see if he has requests from Tottenham or other teams.”

The North Londoners might fancy themselves favourites – and especially if they have Champions League football as a carrot.

Conte’s presence at Hotspur Way cannot be understated and it seems plausible that the Dutchman would be interested in playing under the legendary boss again.

With the exception of a Super Cup with Lazio in 2017, De Vrij has never won a trophy under any other manager except the Tottenham coach and time will tell whether that tips things in their favour.
