Journalist delivers worrying Celtic transfer update on Matt O’Riley

Matt O’Riley could be a prime candidate to leave Celtic this summer amid growing transfer speculation in the 22-year-old Hoops star.

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Ange Postecoglou’s side could struggle to keep the Denmark U-21 international in Glasgow following on from another fantastic year at Celtic, with O’Riley bagging four goals and 12 assists in all competitions.

The former MK Dons star has been a consistent fixture in Celtic’s starting XI this campaign, and growing transfer interest from the Premier League could see O’Riley return to England after just 18 months in Scotland with the Hoops.

With ESPN reporting that the midfielder could be worth as much as £20m, Celtic could make quite the payday if they decide to cash in on O’Riley this summer, who is believed to be wanted by Newcastle United. And an offer this high could be too good to turn down.

O’Rourke said: “Celtic are not considering selling him right now. But as we all know, these big Scottish clubs will struggle to compete with other top European clubs when it comes down to transfer fees and also when it comes down to contract offers as well.”

Lauded as ‘brilliant’ by Kris Boyd, O’Riley has been nothing short of incredible for Celtic since joining last January in one of the best bargain transfers any British side has pulled off in the last two seasons, yet the threat of the midfielder leaving Parkhead is a real one.

The former League One star has taken his game to new heights in Glasgow where O’Riley has become a European-quality midfielder under Postecoglou, and a move to the Premier League could now be on the cards if the likes of Newcastle solidify their interest.

Whilst there’s a good chance O’Riley stays in Scotland for another year, it will be difficult for Celtic to keep hold of the midfielder if an offer comes their way for the Danish youngster, especially one that reaches the £20m threshold.
