Speaking on The Done Deal Show, journalist Dean Jones has delivered an update on Mikel Arteta’s future amid rumours Antonio Conte could take over at Arsenal.
Some members of the Gunners fanbase lost patience with Arteta a long time ago, and a 2-0 opening day defeat against Brentford has once again brought about speculation over the Spaniard’s future.
Jones has some news about Arteta’s job security, and it’s good news for the Arteta out brigade.
What’s been said?
Jones says that although Arteta won’t be sacked after one game, his job isn’t safe like it was last season and that if he can’t put Arsenal in a strong position by December, he could be in trouble.
“Arteta’s not going to be sacked after one game, people have immediately linked him after one game to losing his job and Conte coming in, there’s nothing in that right now. What there is something in is the fact that Arteta’s job isn’t safe like it was last season,” Jones said.
“Last season was a free hit for him and there was no chance he was going to lose his job at that time, but that isn’t the case anymore. We’ll have to see how he comes out of the transfer window and into the season proper once the squad is settled, because if Arsenal aren’t in a strong position going into December I think his job is on the line.”
Right decision
It’s up for debate whether or not the Arsenal board were correct to cut Arteta so much slack last season, but this year there are no excuses.
This is one of the biggest clubs in the country and there’s no reason for them to continue to underachieve, especially with the spending spree they’ve been on this summer.
The Gunners need to set high standards, and if their manager can’t meet expectations, a change may be needed.
Arteta’s job isn’t safe, and to be honest, it shouldn’t be.
