Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Duncan Castles has claimed that Tottenham have already drawn up a transfer shortlist for life after Jose Mourinho this summer.
The Portuguese boss isn’t the most popular man in north London at the moment, and while some Tottenham fans would like to see him relieved of his duties, there’s been no indication from the club that he’s likely to leave anytime soon.
However, it seems as though the club do understand that he may not be their manager next season as they’ve drawn up a shortlist of targets for if Mourinho does go.
“What I can tell you is that in terms of recruitment of players in the summer, Tottenham are currently working with two different transfer lists. One of those is with Jose Mourinho still continuing as the manager, and one of those without,” Castles said.
“They’re looking at different players to suit his requirements and different types of players for if they decide to change. It is interesting because it indicates that they haven’t made that final decision. It fits with the information we have that Mourinho is unsure of whether he’ll still be there at the end of the season, and of course it depends on how they end this season.”
This is certainly interesting to hear.
From the outside looking in, it looked as though Daniel Levy and the higher-ups at Spurs were just watching Mourinho capitulate without forming a plan, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
The people running Spurs seem to be acutely aware that Mourinho’s position may soon become untenable, and they’ve already got plans in place for if he does leave.
This is certainly a situation to keep an eye on in the coming months.
