Italian journalist Paolo Esposito has told Area Napoli that Newcastle United are leading Liverpool in the race for Kalidou Koulibaly.

Esposito has said that Koulibaly will leave Napoli in the summer transfer window, and that the central defender will go to the Premier League.

The Area Di Rigore journalist has added that Newcastle are in “pole position” for the 28-year-old Senegal international.

Although Liverpool and Manchester United want the defender, according to Esposito, the Reds and the Red Devils will offer less transfer fee to Napoli as well as less salary to the former Genk star than the Magpies.

Esposito told Area Napoli: “I believe he will go to the Premier League where there is Newcastle in pole position.

“Then there are Manchester United and Liverpool, who have much more charm than Newcastle, but offer less, both in salary and in transfer fees.”

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle want Koulibaly, while TMW has claimed of Liverpool’s interest in the Senegal international central defender.

Blockbuster Newcastle United signing

Koulibaly is at the top of his game, and there is no doubt that the central defender would be a blockbuster signing for Newcastle this summer.

The Magpies are set to be taken over by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), according to The Times, and the prospective new owners of the club could make big signings this summer, despite the economic uncertainty in the game caused by the global health crisis.
