According to Christian Falk, Newcastle are interested in signing Timo Werner from Premier League rivals Chelsea.

What’s the story?

Well, it was said that the Magpies wanted to sign the £268,000-a-week forward back in January, although a move never materialised.

Now, after facing difficulty in their pursuits of Hugo Ekitike and Arnaud Kalimuendo, Newcastle are once again interested in Werner.

Falk – Head of Football at German news outlet BILD – believes Eddie Howe is keen to sign the Germany international, who Chelsea paid £45m for when signing him from RB Leipzig in June 2020.

Unfortunately, things haven’t exactly gone to plan for Werner at Stamford Bridge.

The 26-year-old has only scored 23 goals in 89 appearances for the Blues, and Thomas Tuchel even spent £97.5m to replace him with Romelu Lukaku, who also flopped in west London.

Newcastle’s interest in Werner comes after he scored 11 goals in 37 appearances last season.

Timo Werner could shine for Newcastle

In our view, Werner could actually be a great signing for Newcastle if Chelsea let him go for a reasonable price.

The German impressively scored 93 goals in 158 appearances for RB Leipzig, where he was regarded as one of the best forwards in Europe, and also the Bundesliga side’s talisman.

Jürgen Klopp even wanted Werner at Liverpool, although the striker himself rejected the Reds for Chelsea.

Sadly, the Stuttgart-born forward has failed to impose himself in west London up against the likes of Kai Havertz, but a fresh start on Tyneside could bring back the Werner of old.

Even if he isn’t scoring goals, the Chelsea No.11 is a Jamie Vardy-like forward who will run the channels and create space for others with his seemingly limitless energy, which could benefit the likes of Callum Wilson.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as a bid could soon be made.
