Liverpool and Newcastle are both keen to sign Moises Caicedo in 2023, with the Reds viewing him as an alternative to Jude Bellingham.
What’s the story?
Well, the above is according to Florian Plettenburg of Sky Germany, who believes Manchester United are also keen to sign the Ecuador World Cup star.
Caicedo – who Brighton paid just £4.5m for in 2021 – has made a name for himself in the Premier League as well as on the international scene, which takes some doing at the age of 21.
Plettenburg doesn’t actually mention that Newcastle are interested.
It was the Mirror who revealed that Eddie Howe wants Caicedo at St James’ Park, as he attempts to make the Magpies a real force in the Premier League once again.
You can see what Plettenburg posted in full on Twitter below.
By the sounds of it, Liverpool have made Bellingham their No.1 target for 2023, but given the magnitude of the task, they are quite sensibly drawing up a shortlist of backup options.
Caicedo has made 14 appearances in the Premier League for Brighton this season, while he has also amassed 27 caps for Ecuador, which is very impressive for his age.
Liverpool have another option if Newcastle pinch Caicedo
If Newcastle take Caicedo from Brighton, and Bellingham ends up somewhere other than Anfield – Real Madrid and Chelsea are said to be interested – then Liverpool still have other options.
One midfield target for the Reds is Benfica maestro Enzo Fernandez, who scored Argentina’s second goal in their recent 2-0 win over Mexico.

It was Spanish news outlet SPORT who revealed that Liverpool want to sign the South American, although competition for his signature could become very fierce if he keeps shining at the World Cup.
Keep an eye on Liverpool in January, as we would be very surprised if they didn’t sign a new midfielder.
