Steven Bergwijn could be deployed up front in a brand new striking role ahead of leaving Tottenham Hotspur, it has been claimed.
The Netherlands international is on the verge of quitting Tottenham in favour of joining Ajax this summer.
Bergwijn, a £27 million signing in 2020, hasn’t started a Premier League game under Antonio Conte since January and has regularly said in recent months that he’s more than likely going to leave.
The 24-year-old is an excellent winger and can be influential, evident by his form for his country, but a Dutch journalist has revealed that the former PSV Eindhoven attacker could be used in a more central role with the Eredivisie outfit.
Mike Verweij of De Telegraaf has said: “Brobbey should be an alternative to that, but Tadic and even Bergwijn will also play there.”
It would be a questionable look for Tottenham, Conte and Fabio Paratici is Bergwijn proves a successful number nine.
After all, Spurs need a back-up option for Harry Kane up front and it would be interesting to see if Conte would’ve kept the player and used him primarily as a plan-b to the Spurs marksman.
That being said, the player wants regular football and there’d be nothing regular about being Kane’s understudy in North London.
Leaving the Lilywhites certainly makes sense from the player’s perspective and it’ll be fascinating to see how he fares up top, if that materialises.
