According to Football.London’s Alasdair Gold, Ajax boss Erik ten Hag was interested in becoming Tottenham Hotspur boss – but the club have left him behind.

Tottenham sacked Jose Mourinho in April, and more than two months on, they still haven’t managed to find a replacement.

This hunt for a new boss has been shambolic to say the least, with the likes of Brendan Rodgers, Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso all falling by the wayside.

Ten Hag fancied Tottenham move

Gold claims that, earlier in the process, Ten Hag was keen on becoming Tottenham manager, and Spurs were similarly interested him.

Ten Hag then signed a new deal with Ajax, and with Tottenham looking towards other managers, the Dutchman has now been left behind.

“What I know about Ten Hag is that he was interested in Tottenham, and Tottenham certainly liked what he’s done with Ajax.”

“From what I understand, Spurs spoke to him early on in the process and then when they decided to chase Pochettino and then Conte, they very much left that interest behind,” said Gold.

It looks like the ship has sailed on Ten Hag becoming Tottenham boss, which seems a shame given the mutual interest between them not long ago.

The arrival of Fabio Paratici, who allegedly wants a more defensive coach, may be a factor in that, with Ten Hag potentially not fitting the bill any more.

How has Ten Hag fared at Ajax?

The 51-year-old became Ajax boss in 2017, and boasts a stunning win rate of almost 74%, losing just 23 of his 167 games in charge.

Formerly of Bayern Munich II, Ten Hag has won two Eredivisie titles and three other domestic trophies, all whilst playing a fine brand of football.

If Ten Hag was keen on Tottenham, it seems a surprise that they’ve ended up going elsewhere, abut Tottenham may well live to rue this stance.
