Liverpool have been linked with a host of centre backs since Virgil van Dijk’s season-ending injury, and one target has been on their radar for a while.

Van Dijk suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament against Everton last month, meaning he is likely to miss the rest of the campaign.

The likes of Dayot Upamecano and Ozan Kabak have been suggested, but The Mirror claimed at the end of October that Ajax’s Perr Schuurs is a target.

The Dutch talent was on trial at Liverpool in 2018 as he was emerging with Fortuna Sittard, but he instead joined Ajax.

Schuurs, 20, is now featuring in Ajax’s first team, and Klopp was allegedly impressed with his Champions League showing against Liverpool last month.

Ajax beat Utrecht 3-0 on Sunday, but there have been some mixed noises about Schuurs’ displays, starting with Rafael van der Vaart’s criticism on NOS Sport Voetbal.

On that very same show, Voetbal International journalist Freek Jansen – as quoted by Ajax Supporters – suggested that Ajax have doubts over Schuurs’ ability to play at the highest level.

Jansen claims that Ajax may try to replace Schuurs in January if he doesn’t improve in the next three Champions League games – and this should give Liverpool reason to be concerned about moving for him in January.

“Within Ajax there is doubt whether he can handle the level,” said Jansen. “If he shows no improvement in the next three Champions League matches, Ajax will still look for a right central defender. That was already a big issue last summer,” he added.
