According to Dutch journalist Mike Verweij, Steven Bergwijn likes Ajax amid reports the Eredivisie side want to sign the Tottenham forward.

What’s the story?

Well, it was ESPN who revealed that Ajax want the £73,077-a-week man, who is said to have a strained relationship with Antonio Conte at Spurs.

Now, Verweij has shared how Bergwijn views Ajax, and what his thoughts on a move to the Amsterdam Arena are.

As quoted by Voetbal Zone, the journalist said: “Management is always contacted first to ask how the player would feel if an attempt is made. Bergwijn has indicated that he really likes Ajax. Now Spurs came to Ajax to question whether the interest in Bergwijn is serious. The answer was affirmative.”

In that respect, it seems a move back to the Netherlands could soon happen for Bergwijn, who has seriously struggled in the Premier League.

The 24-year-old has made just three Premier League starts so far this season, and has only played 13 minutes of football under Conte.

It’s safe to say his £27m arrival from PSV Eindhoven was a terrible signing by José Mourinho and Daniel Levy.

Tottenham have let Steven Bergwijn down

In fairness to the Dutchman, Spurs haven’t given him a solid foundation to show his best stuff since he arrived in north London.

Despite only arriving in January 2020, Bergwijn has worked under three different managers – four including Ryan Mason – and a range of different playing styles.

The winger couldn’t acclimatise to Mourinho’s defensive style, whereas nobody is really sure what Nuno Espirito Santo was trying to do.

Now, he seems to have fallen out with Conte, who prefers to use wing-backs instead of wingers anyway.

Bergwijn also arrived at Hotspur Way right at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, which made adapting to the Premier League so much harder.

It hasn’t gone Bergwijn’s way in N17 whatsoever, to say the very least.
